Tools used in manual testing

Manual testing is a kind of testing in which a tester tests the testing software manually. In manual testing tester need to play with the testing software just like an end user and he has to go through all the functionality of the software/application for complete testing. For this tester made a test plan and a set of maximum number of test cases so that he will ensure the completeness and correctness of the tested software/application.

Same like as other testing process, manual testing also invoke different stages throughout its testing process.

  1. Unit Testing.
  2. Integration testing.
  3. System Testing.
  4. User Acceptance Testing.

Main disadvantage of manual testing is that it takes lot of time in completion, lot of efforts, and lot of resources and also it required more money as compare to automation testing. But today a number of manual testing tools are available in the software testing market. All these manual testing tools have their own advantage as there are made to test a particular situation of the software.

One of the most usual tools used by tester for manual testing is Excel or Word. In manual testing tester developed scripts on excel or in word in order to maintain the testing records and details. Tester or testing staffs use word tables or excel spreadsheets of recording the testing results and details. But this method of manual testing is not so comfortable. Since using word’s table or excel’s spreadsheets will causes number of problems:

  1. Typical wide format of excel and word.
  2. Hard to make scripts.
  3. No standard report test result.

  1. IBM Rational Manual Tester: Developed by IBM. Best feature of this testing tool are user friendly interfaces, standard icons for displaying or printing reports, reuse of scripts in different modules, warty of font and color styles for writing scripts.
  2. HPQC by HP: One another manual testing tool is HPQC which is introduced by HP. It offer scalable, single and web based application that used in any aspect for quality test management, test planning, scheduling, execution, defect management, cycle and release management and real time reporting.
  3. Rally is one more tools used for manual testing.
